The O’Neill Biofield jacket is our most innovative, biodegradable* outdoor jacket. With technical features including 10K/10K waterproofing and breathability and PrimaLoft® insulation, it keeps you protected from the elements. And after years of enjoying your jacket, it can be biodegraded*.
Below you can find some of the frequently asked questions regarding the Biofield Jacket.
1. What does ‘biodegradable*’ mean?
Biodegradable* refers to a process where the materials are broken down by bacteria in a controlled
2. What is the advantage of biodegradable* products?
A biodegradable* product is designed as a responsible end-of-life solution for the consumer; the
product will biodegrade* in a controlled environment minimizing waste and therefore lessening the
possible harm caused by the product footprint.
3. What is meant by ‘Bio’ in the naming of the O’Neill Biofield Jacket?
‘Bio’ refers to the jacket’s components that have biodegradable* properties.
4. Is the O’Neill Biofield Jacket biodegradable*?
The O’Neill Biofield jacket is biodegradable*. It’s made of a combination of material components
that are biodegradable* in a controlled environment.
All synthetic material components of the jacket are tested under the ASTM D5511 standards, which
indicates overall biodegradation of 94% after 4.6 years when placed in optimal conditions in a

The jacket is not designed to compost. The jacket is designed to biodegrade* in a controlled environment.

7. Are there other companies doing biodegradable* jackets?
Like other companies, O’Neill is also always looking for innovative solutions to create a product that has less impact on the environment.
8. What is left after biodegradation?
The materials are going to biodegrade* into biogas and digestate. With appropriate treatment,
digestate can be used in many beneficial applications, such as nutrient-rich fertilizer, organic-rich
compost, and/or simply as a soil amendment.
9. Is the O’Neill Biofield Jacket made from recyclable materials?
This jacket was designed using a variety of materials, some recycled, some organic, and some of
natural origin, with the purpose to be biodegradable* at the end of its lifecycle. Therefore, the jacket
is not recyclable unless it is deconstructed before the recycling process.
10. Are these jackets suitable to be worn in the rain?
The O’Neill Biofield Jacket is a fully functional parka jacket, with all the required technical finishings to protect the wearer from the elements, such as the 10K/10K lamination (waterproof and breathable)
and “BIONIC-FINISH®ECO” DWR finish to keep them dry.
11. How do I take care of the O’Neill Biofield Jacket?
The care instructions are included in the care label.
12. Does it biodegrade* when I wash it or if it gets wet?
No. The O’Neill Biofield Jacket was developed to biodegrade* only in a controlled environment.
Therefore, getting the jacket wet or washing it will not start the biodegradation process.
13. How do I send the O’Neill Biofield Jacket back to O’Neill, if I want the jacket to be biodegraded*?
O’Neill Europe offers all EU consumers the option to send their O’Neill Biofield Jackets back to ensure
the proper disposal and biodegradation of the jackets.
So, after using your jacket for a few years, we ask you to contact us via the contact form on
eu.oneill.com or via email at email@example.com to request a label to post the jacket.
Unfortunately, this service is not available for consumers outside the EU.
14. What happens with the product when I return it?
We will store the returned product in a predefined warehouse until it is then dispatched to a facility
where the jackets will be biodegraded* in a responsible controlled environment. We will collect
multiple jackets over some time, before sending them to be biodegraded*.
15. Will I receive my money back, upon sending the jacket back to be biodegraded*?
We are thrilled that you are making an effort to support our drive for change in the industry by sending your O'Neill Biofield Jacket is back to us for proper end-of-life processing after years of enjoying the jacket.
You will not receive a refund on the product when you send it back for end-of-life processing.
16. What happens if I return the wrong jacket?
We will investigate the best option to dispose of the product you have returned.
17. What else is O’Neill doing?
We live by Jack O’Neill’s words: “The ocean is alive, and we’ve got to take care of it.” It is our
commitment to protecting the oceans for generations to come.
Seven years ago, we created a product initiative called O’Neill Blue. O’Neill Blue product is designed
to adhere to the minimum requirement—at least 50% of the shell material is derived from a preferred material source. We are proud to say that more than 8 out of 10 products from the O’Neill 2022
collection are the O’Neill Blue products —and we are not stopping here. Please see our sustainability

18. Why are not all O’Neill products biodegradable*?
The O’Neill Biofield Jacket is our newest innovation in combining material components to create a
biodegradable product. We will continue innovating in this space to eventually roll this out to more
products. The process takes time as it requires not only design innovation but a change in our entire
